Phil Hill, born in Miami Florida in 1927, became America’s first Formula One world champion in 1961. That year a new one and a half litre formula was introduced and Ferrari contested the championship with their new 156 ‘sharknose’. The team claimed five victories out of eight races of the season including the spectacular Ferrari 1-2-3-4 finish in the Belgium Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps with Phil Hill driving the winning car from pole position. The World Championship battle was fought that season between Phil Hill and team mate Wolfgang von Tripp but Hill’s three victories provided him the winning margin. Ferrari’s successful season was marred by the tragic death of Wolfgang von Tripp following an incident during the penultimate race of the season at Monza. The car has a 1,477cc all alloy V6 engine with double overhead camshafts, 2 valves per cylinder. Transmission was via 5 speed transaxle with air cooled clutch. The space frame chassis had inboard brakes and wire wheels.
