The Mazda 787B made history in Le Mans in 1991, being the first japanese car to win the race, and the first to win with a rotary Wankel motor.
Mazda entered three cars for the race. The green and orange 'Renown' car no. 55, driven by Gachot, Herbert and Weidler, started from the 19th position on the grid and slowly climbed to the first place. The combination of the bright decoration and its unique, loud engine turned this car into one of the most famous Le Mans winners.
